Test loading in Romania

Viaduct Mures River in Simeria, Rumania

On December 4th and 5th, Companiei Naţionale de Autostrăzi şi Drumuri Naţional din România (CNADNR) subjected the Viaduct over Mures River in Simeria to a test loading before commissioning this part of Autostrada A 1, section DEVA – ORASTIE, to traffic in the course of this month.
With span widths of 12 x 60m and a total length of 720m, the bridge is the largest engineering structure of this section and was built by STRABAG AG Bucharest. Draft and final design were established under the overall control of SSF RO Timisoara in joint venture with SSF Ingenieure AG Munich.
The responsible engineers at SSF designed a steel composite superstructure and suggested to implement the carriageway slab as prefabricated girder grid (VTR® method) in order to accelerate construction execution. The advantages of this apparently simple solution lie in its short construction time, the economic fabrication costs, low maintenance costs and easy possibilities of demolition and recycling. The bridge was planned and executed in accordance with sustainability criteria.
The superstructure with 20420 m² was built in a record time of 12 months so that the bridge was handed over on time. The client received a robust structure, easy to maintain, that integrates modestly into the landscape.
