New Order: Replacement Rahmede Viaduct

SSF Ingenieure in a joint venture contracted for construction management

Rahmede viaduct in North-Rhine Westphalia became famous throughout Germany during its demolition by controlled explosion in Mai 2023. In December 2021, severe damages were detected at the bridge so that it had immediately been closed for traffic.

Now, the pressure is on to replace the bridge as fast as possible. In October 2023, transport minister Volker Wissinger launched the new construction by symbolically breaking the ground. Within a construction period of three years a new large-scale bridge will be built. It will be around 450 metres long and consist of two parts placed on in total eight piles.

At the beginning of 2023, SSF Ingenieure in a joint venture with Eberhardt Ingenieure and Schüssler-Plan was contracted for construction management and supervision as well as production monitoring (lot 1). “We are looking forward to working on this exciting large-scale project,” says Karol Biczysko, head of the construction management department at our branch Düsseldorf. The time frame is tight: mid-2026 traffic is planned to roll over the first partial structure. Completion of the entire bridge is projected for 2027.

Technical information about the structure:

  • Separated substructures and superstructures for each carriageway
  • Considering the planned motorway expansion to 6 lanes
  • Substructure: Concrete piles made of reinforced concrete with a height of up to 70 m
  • Superstructure: Walkable hollow steel box, height of 4.60 m
  • External diagonals to support the cantilever slab
  • Assembly of superstructures by incremental launching
  • Total length: 453 m
  • Largest span width: 107.5 m
  • Height up to 70 m
