Motorway A3 expansion near Regensburg

Completion of key structure near Burgweinting

Motorway A3 between interchange Regensburg and junction Rosenhof is currently expanded to six lanes. The around 15-kilometre-long section comprises 16 bridges to be widened or newly built. A key structure of the project is the around 200-metre-long bridge crossing 23 long-distance and freight tracks near Burgweinting. This bridge was completed at the beginning of this month and opened for traffic.

The new structure consists of two separate superstructures over three spans (61m – 78m – 56m) with a width of 19 metres each. The superstructures were built as composite cross-sections with two walkable hollow steel boxes each. The complex bridge project was implemented while railway and road traffic was continued. Both separated superstructures were constructed one after the other by incremental launching. The new hollow steel boxes made of weather-proof steel were connected to the existing longitudinal girders of the bridge and longitudinally launched. Afterwards, the deck slabs were concreted in their final position.

On 3 November 2023, the federal motorway authority Autobahn GmbH invited the participating construction companies and engineering offices as well as politicians and press to the opening ceremony. The completion of this key structure marks a huge milestone for the expansion project. Completion of the entire section is planned for the second half of 2024.

SSF Ingenieure signed responsible for the technical analysis of final design in view of railway-related issues and its approval as engineer authorized to submit building documents; moreover, we were contracted for the design of the required modifications at the track installations and technical equipment as well as application of required track closures during construction.
