City-Tunnel Leipzig Opened to Traffic

On Saturday, December 14th, 2013, the new regional train line tunnel was inaugurated. Jan Mücke, parliamentary secretary at the Federal Ministry of Transport, Stanislaw Tillich, Minister President of the Free State of Saxony, DB AG’s CEO Rüdiger Grube, and major of Leipzig Burkhard Jung attended the ceremony. 

The City Tunnel connects the town centre with the exhibition centre, the airport and neighbouring cities. Travel times are significantly reduced. 

In addition to the around 4km long, double-tube railway tunnels including ramps, the construction of several train stations and so called network-completing measures linking the tunnel to the existing railway network were part of the project.
