The tunnel is part of the project "Erding ring connection" which extends the current airport tunnel eastwards. The new section comprises amongst other a new holding depot and turn loop at Schwaigerloh and will connect the two regional train terminals Erding and Freising to Airport Munich.

The underground section, starting at the airport, has a length of around 1.8 kilometres and leads from the tunnel extension to a ca. 1,500-metre and a ca. 300-metre long trough structure bringing the trains to the surface.

SSF Ingenieure signs responsible for final design of the tunnel and trough structures ordered by company Porr GmbH & Co. KGaA. The tunnel's shell construction will be completed in 2021 and subsequently equipped with the necessary railway technical equipment by DB Netz AG.
