Motorway interchange Heumar, the south-eastern part of the Cologne ring road, connects motorways A3, A4 and A59, and is one of the most frequented motorway interchanges in Europe. It has seen better days and by now many structures show weaknesses. In total 14 existing structures are replaced by eleven new ones. At the centre of the conversion is the interchange’s direct ramp. The existing dam including three small bridges, now forming the direct ramp, is replaced by a new, 1.8-kilometre long dam featuring a much longer, more than 325-metres long, bridge spanning over the interchange. The bridge will be built as steel composite construction. To avoid interference on the lanes underneath, it will be incrementally launched. Once the new ramp is completed, the existing structures will be demolished. Afterwards, the other structures will be demolished and newly erected.
