The bridge over the Van Starkenborgh Canal is part of the railway line Groningen – Leeuwarden. The bridge is replaced to improve the navigability of the main water way Lemmer – Delfzijl. In July 2017, the approximately 1600 ton heavy main part of the bridge was floated into position and assembled.

Since its completion at the beginning of 2018, larger ships can navigate this passage safely and flawlessly. The load-bearing structure is a single-tracked arch bridge made of steel with a main opening of 135 m and two foreland areas, each 20 m long. The deck consists of a ballasted concrete track slab placed on cross girders. The total steel weight amounts to around 2000 tons.
