The competition design comprises an around 1,000-metre-long bridge ensemble, divided in the sections Elbe bridge, viaduct and station Moldauhafen.

Underground train line U4 in Hamburg will be expanded to the south beyond its current terminal Elbebrücken to connect the city quarters Veddel and Kleiner Grasbrook through the new station Moldauhafen. The main idea of the competition is to create economically efficient and sustainable structures for users as well as residents. Where reasonable , this will be implemented by covering the steel bridge ensemble by panels. This also makes the bridge ensemble with is varying structural solutions due to different requirements appear as one continuous sequence.
Elbe River bridge highlights the ensemble of the historic Freihafenelbe bridge and the Norderelbe bridge, and at the same time establishes the new bridge as part of the ensemble. The superstructure consists of three powerfully stretched truss girders. A pedestrian and cycle lane is attached laterally on a cantilever arm which opens a free view over the Elbe and provides a safe separation of traffic participants.
Underneath the connecting viaduct, urban spaces for sport, markets and recreation will be created, transforming the bridge ensemble into a usable urban area.
Station Moldauhafen will be equipped with a walkable wood roof becoming a viewpoint and identity-forming element of the new quarter. The modular roof creates a characteristic, functional and ambient meeting and mobility point.
