The new federal road B474n will relieve the towns of Datteln and Waltrop from through-traffic. On a length of around 4 kilometres roads, cycle lanes and rural roads were newly built and linked to the existing road network at three junctions while traffic continued during construction. At the heart of the project is the remarkable tied-arch bridge over the Dortmund-Ems-Canal: the 130-metre-long “Datteln Sea Arch” was preassembled on land and afterwards spectacularly launched over the canal. The development is completed by two more bridges built by integral construction method, modern drainage systems and bat bridges for species protection.
