New extension to the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia

The complex new building with the four circular buildings is being constructed on the site of the state parliament.

Building cylinders merge with the Bürgerpark

The state parliament building in North Rhine-Westphalia, which was built in the 1980s, has become too small for the current requirements of parliamentary operations. Additional office and meeting rooms are needed to provide sufficient space for hearings, specialist committees, and information events as well as citizen dialogues.

At the beginning of 2020, the NRW state parliament and the city of Düsseldorf launched a Europe-wide architectural and ideas competition for the extension of the building and an adjoining public park. The design that won the competition envisages four ring-shaped, elevated buildings that are connected to each other and to the existing state parliament building and are integrated into a park.
