Milestone at underground station conversion Sendlinger Tor

Opening of the first extension structure

On Thursday, 30 April, after completing the crosscut to Sonnenstraße, the first extension structure at underground station Sendlinger Tor has been opened for passengers. After three years of construction, an important milestone was achieved for the modernization of the over 45-year old station. The extension Sonnenstraße creates an additional link between the platforms of U1/U2 and the mezzanine. Just as the second crosscut to Blumentraße, it serves as additional exit and, moreover, it includes the new operation and utility rooms which used to be located in the connecting aisle between the platform tubes. This creates more space in the passages to distribute passengers.

The conversion was accomplished while operation was continued which presented a unique planning challenge. The completion of the extension at Sonnenstraße paved the way for the next construction section of the large scale construction project: the conversion of the central area. This next construction phase will increase the space significantly. An existing wall will be replaced by columns and the staircases will be modified in view of avoiding passenger congestions and crossings during transit.

Completion of the second extension Blumenstraße is planned in 2023 when the entire conversion project will be finished.
