Tunnel Construction for the 2nd Regional Train Main Line Starts
21. September 2026
Another milestone at Munich’s new regional train connection
On 17 September, the tunnel boring machine “Donna Maria” started drilling for the 2nd regional train main line. From Donnersbergerbrücke it will make its way along around 3 kilometres towards Marienhof. A reconnaissance and emergency tunnel will be created, which later will run between the two main tunnels of the new regional train line. The 178-metre-long and around 700-tonne-heavy tunnel boring machine drills around eight metres per day.
In spring 2027, Donna Maria will reach Central Station, where the machine will be pulled through the new SSF-designed station structure at Central Station, before continuing its way to Marienhof.
Tunnel boring is an important milestone for the 2nd regional train main line. The new connection will relieve the existing overburdened main line, and service three new underground stations: Central Station, Marienhof and Ostbahnhof. For the design of the three stations, SSF Ingenieure signs responsible for project planning of engineering structure, structural design, feasibility studies, inter-professional coordination as well as support during approval design amongst other.
We are looking forward to supporting this exciting infrastructure project in the heart of Munich, and to achieving another important milestone with starting tunnel boring operations.
