Traffic Opening Railway Bridge Königs Wusterhausen

More performance for regional and freight traffic

The extensive renovation works at station Königs Wusterhausen have successfully been completed. New switches, additional track installations and expanded train options in the north and south, eliminate a notable bottleneck in Brandenburg’s railway network. The bridge at Notte canal is currently still being widened to guarantee parallel trains from and to Berlin in the future.

A central part of the entire project is the replacement of the railway bridge over Storkower Strasse. The old bridge could no longer fulfil the increased requirements which is why a new frame bridge was erected next to it, which was subsequently launched into its final position. The tunnel area was significantly widened and now provides space for pedestrian paths on both sides – the old pedestrian underpass was no longer required.

By lowering the road as well as applying a slenderer construction method for the new structure, a clearance of 3.7 metres was achieved despite the bridge height essentially remaining the same. Additionally, the local circumstances – such as an existing roundabout and the bus station – were integrated into the design. Moreover, east of the bridge another roundabout was created which durably improves the traffic situation.

The increased load-bearing capacity of the new railway bridge also benefits freight traffic. During the construction, temporary bridges were used to minimise train traffic restrictions as much as possible.

The completion of the project means a significantly more stable, performant and future-oriented infrastructure for passengers and freight.
