Traffic Opening of New Ahr Valley Railway Line

Inbetriebnahme der neuen Ahrstrecke

19. December 2025

The railway is back in Ahr Valley!

After the disastrous natural disaster, we faced a truly massive task. On time for the new railway schedule in December, regional trains once again pass the entire Ahr Valley line between Remagen and Ahrweiler. For the people and the region it is a strong sign of reconstruction: Public, sustainable mobility returns!

In the context of reconstruction, 29 kilometres of track with 28,000 sleepers, 36,000 metres of rail and new switches were placed along the entire line, and 60,000 tonnes of ballast were applied. Fifteen new bridges were built, and seven more were renovated. Moreover, all retaining structures and culverts were renewed and railway embankments were largely restored. All stations were modernised. Ten stations were completely replaced or renovated and now offer barrier-free accessibility and comfort for passengers.

The electrification of the line as well as installations of modern control and safety technology are the basis for a reliable 20-minute-cycle. 880 pole foundations, 55 kilometres of overhead cable, 84 new signals and 19 technologically renewed railway crossings were installed and connected to the new electronic interlocking system in Ahrweiler.

The Ahr line was not just restored to its old state but technologically modernised and, where possible, designed in a flood-resistant manner. The new bridges have larger flow-through diameters and don’t require piles inside the riverbed. Particularly deep foundations and reinforced railway embankments increase the infrastructure’s resilience towards extreme weather events.

The project was implemented within the very ambitious schedule. This was made possible, among others, by the simplified legal procedures due to the flood catastrophe as well as the speedy political decision to modernise the line. The financial resources for the reconstruction were provided by the federal government. Moreover, the state of Rhineland-Palatinate contributed comprehensive investments, especially for the electrification.

On 12 December 2025, the Arh Valley route has been opened and received large public feedback. Evelyn Palla ) chairman of the board at Deutsche Bahn AG), Patrick Schnieder (Federal Transportation Minister) and Alexander Schweitzer (state premier Rhineland-Palatinate) were present at the ceremony. The invited guests also included representatives of SSF Ingenieure.
