New construction in under 20 months

Successful project completion: The Haarbachtal viaduct has been completed and opened for traffic. The entire construction time for the lanes in both directions amounted to less than 20 months after controlled explosion of the old structure. The new construction followed the schedule planned by AMAND Bau NRW in record time. “The successful ‘Aachen model’ can now be used as a blueprint for future large-scale projects that entail long-term road closures”, said Dirk Brandenburger, technology director at the federal motorway authority Autobahn GmbH, at the opening ceremony.

The new bridge consists of two superstructures, designed as steel composite bridge with trapezoidal cross section. Due to the large cantilever of the deck slab, the deck is supported in transverse direction by double T-shaped longitudinal girders, connected to the main box section of the bridge by tension cords and compression diagonals.

The day before the opening, on Sunday 7 September, citizens had the opportunity to experience the Haarbachtal viaduct in a very special way: on foot or by bicycle on the 160-metre-long bridge during Open Bridge Day, before it was officially opened for traffic. Numerous guests used the opportunity for a stroll and to get informed.

We are glad that we’ve contributed with our design of the superstructure, the substructures and the pit linings, contracted by AMAND Bau NRW, an essential part to the implementation of the Haarbachtal viaduct in such a short time frame, and that the project has now been successfully completed and traffic can roll unobstructed over the new bridge.
