Superstructure Successfully Launched

The successful superstructure launch of the new overpass in Leipzig marks an important milestone for the new construction of the railway bridge. During a railway closure on 31 July, the previously pre-assembled truss bridge was launched precisely into its final position over the tracks by four self-propelled modular transporters (SPMT).

The new overpass replaces the old railway bridge in Leipzig’s Sellerhausen-Stünz quarter. It will carry the future railway line Leipzig Anger-Crottendorf – Leipzig-Heiterblick over the lines Leipzig – Dresden and Leipzig – Geithain and will thus contribute to an efficient and future-oriented railway infrastructure. The new construction is a column-free truss structure implemented by steel composite method. SSF Ingenieure signs responsible for final design of the project.

After the successful bridge installation, construction works will now focus on the removal of the track cover layer, the reconstruction of the tracks and overhead-cable installations as well as the construction and grouting of the bridge bearings. At the same time the abutments will be backfilled and conditions for the installation of the ballastless track will be created.

This construction progress is an essential step towards the reopening of the east Leipzig freight belt. Opening of the new overpass is planned for the end of 2026.
