Replacement Structure “In den Birken“

After the preparatory works and construction start of the replacement of bridge “In den Birken” at motorway A3 north of interchange Hilden, another important milestone has been achieved: Construction works at the first section were successfully completed. After the modular slabs were placed within a few days and force fitted, further finishing works were performed. Subsequently, the first construction section has been opened for traffic on 15 July.

This traffic opening represents the completion of the first of four main construction phases. The following phases comprise the completion of the partial structure in direction Oberhausen as well as the next partial structure in direction Frankfurt.

A modern modular construction method of company Max Bögel is implemented which uses prefabricated deck slabs made of high-strength, self-compacting concrete. The components are fabricated at the plant and custom fit at the construction site. This procedure reduces construction time, and thus interferences into traffic are reduced to a minimum. At the same time, the high degree of prefabrication allows for precise implementation and contributes to efficient construction execution.

We are happy about the on-schedule construction progress and say thank you to all project participants for their cooperation. The successful completion of this construction section signifies an important step towards the new bridge structure.
