Renovation of Paul-Heyse Underpass Almost Completed

Sanierung der Paul-Heyse Unterführung kurz vor Abschluss

21. March 2022

An improved design makes the tunnel more pleasing and brighter

Paul-Heyse Underpass, which directs individual traffic in the vicinity of Munich’s central rail station underneath the train tracks, is considered a visual flaw in the city. The underpass is dark, noisy and dirty. This will change this year as the renovation project, started in 2021, is almost completed.

Wall cladding with lightly coloured metal panels makes the tunnel tube brighter. At the same time, those panels are noise-absorbing thus minimising the noise level within the tunnel by around four dB – in terms of noise this corresponds to a traffic reduction of around 50 percent. Additionally, a new lighting concept is implemented – at the upper edge of the new cladding, lighting strips are applied, and the tunnel’s characteristic steel centre piles are illuminated in blue.

The project is on schedule and the tunnel will probably be completed in March 2022. Together with the architects from Lang Hugger Rampp and other design and execution partners, we are happy to contribute to this project to make Munich’s traffic routes more beautiful and safer.
