Progress at Motorway A143: Large-Scale Bridge Takes Shape
06. May 2026
Important milestones after three years of construction
At the new construction of motorway A143 to close the gap of the double-beltway around Halle and Leipzig, work is steadily progressing. The large-scale project, which in the future will significantly relief the city of Halle from trans-regional through-traffic, has achieved important milestones after three years.
At the heart of the project is the Saale River bridge in construction lots 4.1 and 4.2, consisting of a noise protection tunnel, river bridge and foreland bridge. After the steel superstructure had been successfully launched last summer, the second reinforced concrete superstructure has been completed last autumn. Another milestone is the now completed in-situ concrete supplement of the orthotropic composite slab.
Currently, works are focused on the construction of the noise protection tunnel as well as the complex preparations to connect the tunnel to the river bridge. Another subsequent step will be to connect the river bridge to the foreland bridge. Simultaneously, around 800 meters of bridge caps have already been built.
A look at the used materials highlights the dimensions of this technologically challenging project: in total around 50,000 cubic metres of concrete have been used until now, supplemented by around 680 tonnes of prestressing steel, 7,000 tonnes of reinforcement steel as well as 5,000 tonnes of structural steel.
With those developments the large-scale project finally takes shape and brings the overall project at motorway A143 closer to its completion.
