Placing of VFT Girders for Pedestrian and Cyclist Bridge Saffenburger Tunnel

On Wednesday, 22/10/2025, the prefabricated composite girders (VFT®) for the pedestrian and cyclist bridge Saffenburger Tunnel were placed. This step, two and a half years after design started, marks the completion or near finalisation of all 9 railway and 5 pedestrian and cyclist bridges designed by us.

In addition to the bridges, several structures came up to be designed and coordinated at short notice, which now have also been finalised, and the Ahrtal railway can reopen operations at the end of this year all within the set schedule.

In addition to our design, the very good collaboration and commitment of all participants contributed to achieving this goal. This includes the fast decisions made by the client, the project team at the German railway company DB and the regional office for mobility in Cochem, as well as the sometimes short-notice design and construction reviews and the enormous capacity of the executing company Leonhard Weiss which erected almost all structures in parallel in a very short timeframe.
