Opening of Underground Station Sendlinger Tor in Munich
20. September 2024
Complex conversion of an over 40-year-old station successfully completed
Underground station Sendlinger Tor in Munich is one of the most frequented hubs of the urban transport system. Since its construction in 1971 and following expansion in 1980, the city has exponentially grown, thus entailing a three-fold increase in passenger volume. The 40-year-old station hadn’t been designed for those dimensions. Moreover, rain and salty condensation had damaged the concrete. To make the station fit for the future, it was expanded by two access and connecting structures, and all three levels were entirely renovated, modernised and redesigned, made barrier-free and optimised in terms of fire protection. Traffic was maintained during the conversion in extremely confined spaces. After seven years of construction, the project was completed with an opening ceremony on 20 September 2024. Already in December 2023, the new mezzanine level – an important part of the renovation – had been opened. Subsequently, the last works on ceilings and facades as well as at the new staircase to Blumenstrasse were completed. They are now finished as well so that all new exits and expansions of the station can be used. We are happy about the successful completion of this complex project, and glad to have contributed to guaranteeing an efficient, safe and comfortable public transport network in Munich.
