New bridge at Elster valley

At the end of 2024, residents near the Barthmühlen bridge in the Vogtland region got a special Christmas present: On 19 December the new bridge over river Weisse Elster was opened for traffic. It connects the villages Röttis and Jocketa via the district road 7880 and is the only access to train station Barthmühle.

Already in November 2022 the old structure had to be closed due to heavy water undercutting. During the last two years, everyone affected had to take long detours. Now, after only five months of construction, the new bridge is ready – a great relief for everybody who regularly uses this route.

The bridge is closely related to the renovation of the historic Elster viaduct . In the framework of this construction the bridge had to be adapted to the existing railway crossing on the line Gera-Weischlitz in the area of station Barthmühle. To correspond to the requirements of the widened track width, the new road bridge had to be widened too.
