Nagerl Bridge in the Bavarian Forest

An important step has been made at the replacement of Nagerl Bridge in the Bavarian Forest. At the end of June 2026, the new steel superstructure was erected. The three preassembled large components of the around 120-metre-long superstructure were assembled on 29th and 30th June onto the newly built piers next to the old bridge. After assembly of the two edge spans on the first day, on 30th June, the around 480-tonne-heavy centre segment was placed by a 1,000-tonne crawler crane. Developer, designer and members of the media accompanied the complicated process on site.

The old Nagerl Bridge was built in 1877 and spans the river Schwarzer Regen with a span width of 72 metres. The riveted steel truss superstructure lies on concrete abutments and is now being replaced by a modern structure with the same alignment.

The new three-span steel truss bridge with variable construction heights has span widths of 28, 64 and 28 metres. The elegant course of the truss’s lower chords integrates harmoniously into the Schwarze Regen valley. At the same time, smaller abutments have less impact on the landscape.

The structural concept has been developed in a way that effects on railway operations and on the sensible environment of the Schwarze Regen were as small as possible. The new superstructure was assembled next to the railway line and launched into its final position together with the piers during a railway closure. Railway traffic will continue via the old structure in the meantime.

The Nagerl Bridge is part of a package of three viaducts on the railway line Landshut – Bayerisch Eisenstein. Ohetal Bridge and Deffernik Bridge are as well designed by SSF Ingenieure.
