Deutsche Bahn has contracted us for another large-scale project of the 2nd regional train main line in Munich. Specifically, the project entails the construction of the eastern tunnel section between the new underground passenger transport system at Ostbahnhof and the area at Berg-am-Laim-Strasse.
We are looking forward to contributing again our experience with complex tunnel constructions at this section, and to advancing an essential infrastructure project for Munich.
Construction preparation and execution are implemented in the framework of the innovative “partnership model rail”, which involves all executing companies already during the design phase where they work in interdisciplinary teams.
“Contract award of the eastern tunnel section of the 2nd main line sends a strong signal for progress and innovation”, says Markus Springer, technical manager east at the 2nd main line. “The new partnership model rail enables faster and more efficient construction through a new incentivising contract scheme. Hence, the new contract award is an important element to successfully complete this regionally important infrastructure project.”
In the framework of this model, Deutsche Bahn has awarded four contracts to Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau AG, the joint venture Porr GmbH & Co. KGaA, Porr Spezialtiefbau GmbH, Porr GmbH & Co. KGaA and the joint venture SSF Ingenieure AG and ILF Consulting Engineers AG.
Deutsche Bahn has already entered the phase of joint execution planning with those companies. Construction time is planned to be around six years. DB, the city of Munich, the Free State of Bavaria and the federal government aim with this large-scale project of the 2nd main line at increasing capacity, reliability and attractiveness of the regional train system in Munich and the region, as well at moving more traffic to the environment-friendly rail. To achieve this goal a second regional train main line is being built on 10 kilometres, at a depth of up to 48 metres between Laim and Leuchtenbergring. Moreover, Deutsche Bahn will build five new stations, provide a better airport connection, strengthen the regional train external branches, open an express link and regional train lines as well as a new electronic interlocking system at Ostbahnhof. According to the current schedule, DB will complete the project between 2035 and 2037.
