Groundbreaking for Westend Bridge Replacement

Spatenstich Westendbrücke

16. December 2025

Groundbreaking ceremony on 5/12/25 officially launches replacement of Westend bridge (A100 city motorway Berlin).

Since 2017, SSF Ingenieure has been designing the new bridge structure, initially at a parallel position.

After Ringbahn bridge was damaged in March 2025 followed by a closure of the north-bound lane of motorway A100 and the tracks underneath, the demolition of both bridges was decided as part of a coordinated project and expedited replacements of Ringbahn and Westend bridge.

Consequently, the replacement structure of Westend bridge, contrary to the initial design, will now be built at the same location. In record time, an entirely new structure design and tender process were required.

The new design proposes a 6-span steel composite bridge with hollow box cross sections of 237 metres length. At both abutments the structure is flanked by up to 8-metre-high and 95-metre-long retaining walls. The confined inner-urban situation between rail tracks and existing structures presents a particular challenge during the design processes.

Client is DEGES Deutsche Einheit Fernstraßenplanungs- und -bau GmbH. SSF Ingenieure provided its design services within a joint venture with Schüssler Plan.

During the current project phase, SSF Ingenieure is responsible for parts of the final design contracted by the joint venture comprising STRABAG, Donges and Züblin Spezialtiefbau. Completion of the Westend bridge replacement is projected together with Ringbahn bridge for summer 2027.

The quick re-design and the close collaboration between all parties provided the basis for a fast implementation and a sustainable renewal of the transport infrastructure – and the groundbreaking now kicks off the construction phase.
