Groundbreaking Ceremony Adenauer Bridge Ulm

24. March 2025
Construction works begin for the replacement bridge of federal road B10
Adenauer Bridge is one of the most important traffic routes between Ulm and Neu-Ulm. It leads federal road B10 over the Danube as well as a double-tracked railway line and three pedestrian and cycle lanes. As the old structure’s lifecycle is nearing its end, it will be replaced by a new modern construction. In this context, the traffic areas will be widened from six to eight lanes. Moreover, a three-metre-wide pedestrian and cycle lane on both sides as well as noise barriers are planned.
The groundbreaking ceremony on 19 March officially launched construction works. Numerous politicians attended, amongst them Federal Minister for Digital and Transport, Volker Wissing. Now, the design will be step by step implemented – the entire construction is scheduled for four years.
The superstructures, to be built separately for each direction, are designed as reinforced concrete composite structures with three hollow steel boxes each and a reinforced concrete deck slab in the cross section. The substructures are located outside the existing substructures/foundations. The hollow steel boxes are vaulted in longitudinal direction towards the pile. The pile copies the line of the superstructure. In their final position, the superstructures are connected to the pile. During construction additional supports are required as the superstructure in direction Ulm is used to divert traffic during construction and subsequently will be launched transversally into its final position.
Challenges are the location in the city in a confined area, several engineering structures and supply lines within the construction site as well as the frequent use of the adjoining pedestrian and cycle lanes.
