Second largest brick bridge in the world now fit for the future

The general restoration of the Elstertal viaduct in the Vogtland region has successfully been completed. After more than three years of construction, the second largest brick bridge in the world presents itself once again in a completely renovated state and now meets all requirements of modern railway traffic. The historic structure from the mid-nineteenth century, which crosses the Weisse Elster valley as part of the railway line Leipzig – Hof, was renovated while traffic was ongoing and, at the same time, restored by preserving its historic character. A remarkable challenge as never before an arch bridge of the German railway had undergone general restoration at this scale.

The project comprised the renewal of the reinforced concrete deck slabs, piles, arch as well as the restoration of comprehensive masonry areas, moreover, the installation of a new track trough, overhead cables and signalling installations. Particular focus was given to preserving the historic substance: tens of thousands of bricks were produced custom-made copied from the historic examples and placed true to the original bridge design. Furthermore, a new transfer point was established which will create more operational flexibility in the future.

The project was completed on time and within the planned budget. The bridge has already been operated again on two tracks since September 2025 before completion of all renovation works. Now, the last constructions at the bridge are finished – celebrated by Deutsche Bahn AG during a ceremony on 10 December. Several speeches were held by Ms. Hering (project manager), Mr. Hebenstreit (DB), Mr. Gutte (director at company Glass), Mr. Kilian (construction supervision manager) and the Vogtland district administrator; representatives from the construction companies and DB InfraGo as well as the design companies appreciated their success together.
