Design Competition Railway Bridge over Norderelbe River

25. February 2026

Announcement of the final results and exhibition of the designs

The renewal of the historic railway bridge over Norderelbe river is an essential infrastructure project in Hamburg. In addition to the huge significance for city traffic, the historic bridge ensemble is of urban planning relevance. In this context, DB InfraGO AG and the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg launched a European-wide design competition to replace the structure. We, together with the London-based architectural office WilkinsonEyre as well as GRE German Rail Engineering GmbH, submitted a design to the competition.

After completing the tender process, results of the design competition have been publicly announced. On 24 February a press conference took place at Hamburg city hall where the competition winner was announced. Panta ingenieure GmbH Hamburg, in a joint venture with NEY & Partners BXL n.v. Brussels, are the winners.

Subsequently, all participating design teams and their submitted works are presented in a public exhibition. The exhibition provides an insight into the different design approaches and possible solutions for this complex task. In addition to technical questions, urban design and aesthetic aspects played an important role.

Our design is part of the exhibition as well, which started on 24/02/2026 and will be open to the public for one week at the foyer of the district office Hamburg Mitte at Caffamacherreihe 1-3, 20355 Hamburg. Everyone interested is invited to visit the exhibition from Monday through Friday between 6am and 6pm. Moreover, the competition designs are available at Projektwebsite.

We are happy to show our design at the exhibition and to have been a part of the design competition.
