Launching of new motorway bridge over river Saale

The Saale River Bridge near Salzmünde is part and parcel of the around 13-kilometre-long gap closing of motorway A143. Together with motorways A14, A9, A38 and A143 it forms the so-called Central German Loop – a double beltway encircling the region Halle-Leipzig.

In recent months, around 4,000 tonnes of construction steel were assembled on site to erect the bridge’s steel superstructure. This week one of the most exciting construction stages took place: The 183-metre-long and 30.13-metre-wide steel superstructure was launched over river Saale and accurately reached the pile at the northern construction field.

The span width of the river span is an impressive 131 metres and was built by cantilever method without supports. In the next days, the steel structure will be brought into its final position and completed. Next winter, the gap to the prestressed concrete superstructure of the foreland bridge will be closed; simultaneously, the noise barrier tunnel will be built at the current launching yard.
