Construction Progress at Rader Viaduct

Baufortschritte an der Rader Hochbrücke

25. June 2025

More than half of the steel structure completed

Construction of the new Rader Viaduct is fast progressing. From the south, the entire steel structure has been assembled. It only remains to be launched into its final position. Works at the steel structure on the north side are advancing quickly as well and the superstructure is approaching the Kiel Canal. Construction at the canal piers is also in full swing. The cantilever scaffoldings, specially made for this project, were mounted and the first sections assembled (south); moreover, the haunch nodes at the northern canal pier were built.

Rader Viaduct at motorway A7 crosses the Kiel Canal and the Borgstedter Lake and has been a central thoroughfare to Denmark and Scandinavia since 1972. However, its life span is limited: A structural calculation showed that it can only be operated until 2026.

A renovation not being economically reasonable, a new construction is currently being erected. DEGES GmbH has contracted a design joint venture comprising SSF Ingenieure and Schüßler-Plan to produce preliminary and draft design as well as approval design and tender documents.

Until the end of 2026, east of the old bridge, the first partial structure in direction Flensburg will be erected. Afterwards, the existing structure will be demolished while traffic will run on four lanes on the new bridge. At the same time, construction of the west bridge, planned until 2031, will begin; eventually the route will be trafficable on six lanes.
