After 12 years of design, the west bridge of elevated road north is taking shape
After a design period of more than ten years – from basic evaluation to final design – the future Helmut-Kohl-Allee (the replacement of the elevated road north B44) in Ludwigshafen is taking shape.
An important milestone was reached in May: The steel girders of the west bridge were placed over the railway tracks and Ludwigshafen Central Station. With span widths of almost 60 metres, they signify an impressive step towards completion of this challenging infrastructure project. The SSF team visited the site together with the client and attended this special moment in person.
In the framework of an engineering joint venture, SSF Ingenieure signs responsible for the design of a 860-metre-long section of the future Helmut-Kohl-Allee. In addition to the 445-metre-long west bridge, implemented as steel composite structure over 27 railway tracks, the project comprises several troughs, retaining structures and bridges and thus demands high requirements in view of design, coordination and technical precision.
Several disciplines and offices from the SSF Group participated at the design and tender processes and combined their expertise into the overall project.
The client’s satisfaction with the combined services was reflected in the comfortable and open atmosphere during the on-site visit. Those days in particular show that despite technical and economic challenges, engineering desig remains a collective process which not only creates results but can as well bring joy.
