In November 2010, the Compania Naþionala de Autostrãzi si Drumuri Naþionale din România (CNADNR) as the principal's representative awarded the order for a section of the A1 motorway covering a length of 33.5 km along the DEVA bypass to a consortium led by STRABAG AG. One part of this section consisted of a 720 m long viaduct over the river Mures in Simeria, with STRABAG AG responsible for execution; the design and execution planning was produced by SSF RO in Temeswar, working together with SSF Ingenieure AG in Munich. The order was placed for the principal's draft with a steel composite superstructure consisting of 12 sections with 60 m span width. The bridge was divided into three individual structures of 240 m in length, resulting in the need for altogether four expansion joints for each superstructure and a number of shock absorbers for horizontal loads resulting from earthquakes. The planners designed a steel composite superstructure; to accelerate the execution phase, they proposed using a carriageway slab made of prefabricated girder grillage - VTR design. The advantages of this deliberately simple, graceful solution consist in the short construction period, economic production costs, low maintenance costs and easy subsequent dismantling with recycling option. The bridge was planned and executed intentionally according to sustainability criteria.
