As a result of the summer 2002 flood disaster in eastern Germany, 40 civil engineering structures were built by Deutsche Bundesbahn between Tharandt and Freital, in the course of the Karlsruhe-Stuttgart-Nuremberg-Leipzig/Dresden route upgrading (ABS). This refers to various overpass structures for railways, roads and pedestrians and to several retaining walls. This construction measure was provided without significant restrictions caused by railway service operations.
